DuPont™ ValueShade® -- Application Guide

ValueShade® is the DuPont system that improves topcoat coverage and color match - especially when applying transparent OEM glamour colors. For easy reference, every ChromaSystem™ topcoat color is coded with its correct ValueShade® number, from VS1 (white) to VS7 (dark gray). When you apply an undercoat of the correct ValueShade®, you get faster topcoat hiding in fewer coats, better color matches and significantly increased shop productivity.

These shades can be obtained using undercoats or topcoat groundcoats. Groundcoat formulas are available in the stock numbers shown here, in all MasterTint® topcoat qualities.

Undercoat Procedure

1. Identify the stock code and specific alternate for the topcoat color to be applied.
2. Find the correct ValueShade® number (shown on the ColorNet® or microfiche formula).
3. Select the undercoat to be applied.

To create VS2, VS3, VS5 or VS6, mix as shown below. Agitate thoroughly.

VS2 = Mix VS1:VS4 in a 2:1 ratio
VS3 = Mix VS1:VS4 in a 1:2 ratio
VS5 = Mix VS4:VS7 in a 2:1 ratio
VS6 = Mix VS4:VS7 in a 1:2 ratio

4. Activate and reduce the undercoat according to standard procedures.
5. Apply undercoat normally to properly prepared substrate, following recommendations for number of coats and flash times.
6. Mix and apply topcoat color according to standard procedures. Color match and full hiding will typically be obtained in 2-3 coats.

Tips for Success
For repairs where topcoat color will be blended, especially into adjacent panels, be sure to blend the undercoat as well.

Groundcoat Procedure (optional)

1. Identify the stock code and specific alternate for the topcoat color to be applied.
2. Find the correct ValueShade® number (shown on the ColorNet® or microfiche formula)
3. Properly prepare the substrate, and apply primer and/or sealer according to standard procedures.
4. Mix the groundcoat formula for the correct ValueShade® number in the quality of topcoat desired. For example, ChromaBase® ValueShade® #4 is L9604 groundcoat. Apply 1 coat using normal application techniques.
5. Follow with topcoat color selected in Step 1. Mix and apply according to standard procedures.

Color match and full hiding will typically be obtained in 2-3 coats.

Tips for Success
For repairs where topcoat color will be blended, especially into adjacent panels, be sure to blend the groundcoat as well.
